[ so dutch may or may not have just found out that someone she's come to care about here has gone back into stasis. shouldn't ever do that, care. her own damn fault.
so it's totally neutral information she's passing on, not informed by the drink(s) she's had or emotion or any bullshit like that at all, that has her text jim - ]
[ Not funny. These are the words of a man pretending he's not bothered by the fact that all of his people are still asleep and the transporters to the station are still busted. ]
[ as soon as he knows what's going on, might as well send something sensible out into the wild and go talk to his friends over tea like a normal person. ]
[ Jim may, at a later date, remark on the encryption; he hasn't really been bothering, but he's had a few conversations with people where he's noticed them in use. Almost-engineer that he is, maybe he should join the party.
Hey, Ianto. [ He sounds in good humor, perhaps outside somewhere, walking over uneven terrain, faint background sound that might be a breeze against the mic pickup. He can hear a certain tone in the other man's voice and thinks-- oops? So he makes sure to sound as casual and normal as he ever does. ] If the invite made you uncomfortable, I apologize. You can totally ignore it.
[ Little bit after This, before the escort mission-- ]
You've been up to the Natha ship.
[ Statement, not a question.
After a few seconds, John pings over an audio file -- it's... something all right. It was probably a person saying something at some point, but it doesn't really resemble any of the Natha and it's incoherently noisy. ]
I'd definitely put us higher up the scale than a 1. This is what I'm getting out of pretty much every interactive panel I could get to respond. Well, variations on it. Which means it's not the speakers that are broken, it's something in the system that's corrupted. Which could be a result of the power going up and down, but the question really is how many systems are damaged and if it's getting worse every time the power drops. Sure, we're not going to drop out of the sky in an orbit this steady and the stasis and life support seem like they have back up power, but not knowing what's causing systems to spit out noise makes me uneasy.
[ Two takeaways: one, John Sheppard is indeed taking something seriously. Two: how... did he get this noise out of the ship? Didn't really explain.
Honestly he just wants to talk to someone about it who understands how a spaceship works on some level. Someone who wouldn't instantly panic. ]
The takeaway from my responses there was supposed to be 'non-alarmist'.
[ Just getting that out there first thing, because the last thing Jim wants to do is send a bunch of people who don't know the first thing about spacecraft into a panic. Yeah, he realizes the situation is more serious, but riling people up isn't going to help. ]
Can you explain to me how you're getting this audio? For the record, I'm a captain in Starfleet, which is the humanitarian and defense force of the United Federation of Planets. My standing post is to command a ~500 crew member deep space exploration and military vessel. About thirty percent of my crew is non-human, and my XO is telepathic.
[ So John doesn't have to dumb it down, no matter what the issue is. ]
The evening of Darma's message, Voss and his acolytes observed a flickering then dimming of the moon's luminescence, and saw dark points manifest on the surface, followed by patterns which they theorized to be meteorites. The moon has continued to appear dimmer ever since. That translates to an abrupt change in power mode at the station, and the Natha entering individual spacecraft and leaving.
There's no sign of a struggle, no violence, no busted doors or evidence of forced entry, no damage to the outside of the station. The Natha left voluntarily.
There is, however, superficial damage to the station's mechanics itself, in the form of overloaded circuits, the audio glitch with Darma's last transmission, the inconsistent power feed. After spending a couple days with the problem, I've come to the conclusion that it's due to a forced power-down that didn't follow proper protocol. They threw the main switch instead of taking the time to do it like they should have, suggesting they were in an unavoidable rush.
They left their radars on, which are scanning non-stop, looking for something.
My working hypothesis is that the Natha detected an incoming threat, slammed the station into something akin to stealth mode while Darma tried to get a warning out under the wire, and ran off to meet it. The immediate dilemma: while we can absolutely hotfix most of the hiccups that the shut-down caused (and have done a lot of that so far), it doesn't completely restore smooth power. There are backup generators, but we don't know how much power is too much power. Backup generators by design aren't as powerful and aren't going to boot up as many draining functions as the normal power core, but do we want to risk lighting this place up even the slightest bit more? My instinct right now is: no, we don't. The safety of the stasis chambers has to be priority, and I'm not sure the refugee population has the capability to collectively manage a fight up here and down there at the same time. But we may have to be ready to power it up in a hurry to get defenses going.
Sounds like it make make trouble for our people back in the tubes and there's no good reason to risk it at this point.. monitoring power supply to that area probably wouldn't go astray, though, and I wouldn't be opposed to busting in to their power systems to jerry rig if need be.
My hesitation is if they come back with anyone major tailing them we're gonna be up shit's creek so far as how to defend since.. well. Tandem ship bullshit. Barbatos and Deathscythe can only handle so much by themselves, too, but I think that goes without saying.
I wouldn't think it would go astray to continue operations as if we're expecting an attack even if it never happens. Going in to it assuming the Natha will keep everything neat and tidy is gonna wind up biting everyone in the ass.... would rather be 'paranoid' than taken unassuming.
[Maybe you've seen his by now as well, who knows what the timeline is here...]
How are you holding up out there?
((ooc: i just turned on my ipad after it dead for a long time and found my tag to our other audio thread open. so i thought i would start a new one to make up for that — ianto needs to check in on jim, he’s worried about what’s coming :c))
[ Of course he picks up - not immediately, but he isn't saving it from going to voicemail, either. ]
Hey, [ Jim greets. His voice is slightly tinny, as if he's in an enclosed space. ] I'm doing just fine. The station is stable and the emergency protocol opening up certain chambers has solved a lot of potential problems we thought we had a week ago. You doing alright?
