The evening of Darma's message, Voss and his acolytes observed a flickering then dimming of the moon's luminescence, and saw dark points manifest on the surface, followed by patterns which they theorized to be meteorites. The moon has continued to appear dimmer ever since. That translates to an abrupt change in power mode at the station, and the Natha entering individual spacecraft and leaving.
There's no sign of a struggle, no violence, no busted doors or evidence of forced entry, no damage to the outside of the station. The Natha left voluntarily.
There is, however, superficial damage to the station's mechanics itself, in the form of overloaded circuits, the audio glitch with Darma's last transmission, the inconsistent power feed. After spending a couple days with the problem, I've come to the conclusion that it's due to a forced power-down that didn't follow proper protocol. They threw the main switch instead of taking the time to do it like they should have, suggesting they were in an unavoidable rush.
They left their radars on, which are scanning non-stop, looking for something.
My working hypothesis is that the Natha detected an incoming threat, slammed the station into something akin to stealth mode while Darma tried to get a warning out under the wire, and ran off to meet it. The immediate dilemma: while we can absolutely hotfix most of the hiccups that the shut-down caused (and have done a lot of that so far), it doesn't completely restore smooth power. There are backup generators, but we don't know how much power is too much power. Backup generators by design aren't as powerful and aren't going to boot up as many draining functions as the normal power core, but do we want to risk lighting this place up even the slightest bit more? My instinct right now is: no, we don't. The safety of the stasis chambers has to be priority, and I'm not sure the refugee population has the capability to collectively manage a fight up here and down there at the same time. But we may have to be ready to power it up in a hurry to get defenses going.
Sounds like it make make trouble for our people back in the tubes and there's no good reason to risk it at this point.. monitoring power supply to that area probably wouldn't go astray, though, and I wouldn't be opposed to busting in to their power systems to jerry rig if need be.
My hesitation is if they come back with anyone major tailing them we're gonna be up shit's creek so far as how to defend since.. well. Tandem ship bullshit. Barbatos and Deathscythe can only handle so much by themselves, too, but I think that goes without saying.
I wouldn't think it would go astray to continue operations as if we're expecting an attack even if it never happens. Going in to it assuming the Natha will keep everything neat and tidy is gonna wind up biting everyone in the ass.... would rather be 'paranoid' than taken unassuming.
Constant monitoring has to continue, yeah, of both the power situation and the scanners.
Are the shuttles the only means of defense that can be taken out of the station? I know they have mech suits, but they're behind a higher wall of security. Does anybody have experience with those in particular, are they any easier to work with than the tandem shuttles?
Yeah they have the mech suits. Spotted those out a little too easy but I don't know how many people are cleared for those or could even grasp those kinds of controls too easily.
I'll put out some feelers about that one. They aren't gundams but it's better than those shuttles.
I know a few people I flew with last time they had the shuttles out said they had previous piloting experience, so it's worth a shot.
'Cleared for them' may not be a luxury we can afford if things go downhill. It'd be nice, though, if we knew who all among the refugees can deal with those or the shuttles, or at least be trained without too much of a hassle. I'll ask around too, I know a couple other people from more advanced worlds.
Speaking of: I'm not opposed to making this public knowledge among refugees, I'm just not sure if it's wise to do so before there's something at least resembling a plan in place, considering the clusterfuck going on with the dragon.
Yeah. If we have to liberate them than we will. Better that than getting our asses kicked for no reason other than we didn't use what was available to us.
Better to make a bit of a roster if we can I guess. Right?
There's that and you also don't want to cause a panic over something that could literally turn in to absolutely nothing. Until we have due cause to make people nervous I don't think it's necessary to or pertinent to announce... that's just me though.
If it doesn't work we may have to do something drastic to ensure the safety of the stasis pods.
Yeah. And since we've got the option to try and stay hidden, it's best if as many people as possible focus on the problems dirtside. I don't think Olympia has a stealth mode.
Did you have any plans specifically for that? Even if they're rough it's better than working on the fly with a lot of lives on the line. I can help draft one of you wanted.
A planet in stealth mode would be sick... but. It doesn't look like it does, though.
Roughly, shift 99% of the power to shielding the stasis chamber and finding a way to escort it to a safe place, either on the planet or the 'other moon.' Worst comes to worst I can try to modify the transporters to move the entire unit somewhere, but I'd definitely need to find a spare genius engineer, since it'd be risky in the first place and should be the last resort. The more ideas we have there the better - I wouldn't be surprised if there's an emergency procedure lurking in the automated code of the station, but I'm not sure I can get that far in there even with a serious hack job, or what the consequences of trying would be.
Right.. I can hack pretty well but that would be a last resort. No need to risk all those lives for a little experiment to see, basically.
I like that plan.. let's keep it for now. Genius engineer I'm not but I'm sure there's someone in all this mess that could manage that kinda thing. Might not hurt to put out lowkey feelers.
Alright. Those are our work orders for now. Fix what we can fix and fish for people who can help. Meanwhile, try to avoid death via ancient zombie dragon.
I work in space. Pretty much every case is something insane.
Without a planet to draw raw supplies from, no one will prefer it once food and oxygen starts getting low. That jungle display they had up a few months ago was a hologram, not hydroponics. On-board resource generation can only do so much.
... So that's how you're gonna cop out from telling me a story?
Rude, Jim.
I can survive on rations for a pretty long time.. oxygen though is kinda necessary. You know, lungs and all. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, anyways. Like a contingency plan is nice and all but I don't really wanna fall in to the pit of having disaster plans A, B, & C for nothing to happen at all.
Plus I'm gonna be pissed if I end up eating it on some random planet in a universe I'm not even from.
As much as I hate to admit it, staying low is our best option for the time being. There's too many unknowns at play to risk discovery as we are now.
That's not the same as sitting idle, of course. Posting a sentry roster and getting a full report of things that need repair would be an ideal first step.
Honestly - we should probably look at the ability to stay hidden as a blessing. Thinking about a fight might be more viscerally satisfying, but I can't imagine a scenario in which mass casualties aren't on our side if it comes to that.
Supplies are still scattered here and there if you look for them hard enough - but I appreciate the offer. Sarqso. Feel free to drop by if you have the time though. Our sleeping friends make for good listeners, but they're somewhat lacking in keeping up their end of the conversation.

Overall, agreed.

Yeah that's a uh.. special problem to have, huh?
I never honestly thought I'd experience something like that. And I have a damn Gundam that I can use by myself.
Honestly I'd rather just float in space than deal with that.

Well, hopefully we won't all have to evacuate up to Thesa because the planet gets crushed.
no subject
Well you can't just say that and then not deliver on stories.
So let's hear it!
I mean that wouldn't be skin off my nose. I prefer space and zero g's honestly. Problems with comin' out of a tube in space I guess.

I, personally, would love to have disaster plans with no disaster. But I know what you mean.

You sound like Howie. Needs to be able to flail all over the place to tell a story and deviate off on tangents all the time.
Well, no need to panic the common folk, right?
It's also energy we could be designating somewhere else that's a bit more immediately constructive.

Keeping an eye on the stasis pods, yes. I'll be here for some time yet.

[ Patience is, without a doubt, the hardest lesson Jim's ever had to learn. ]
I'll be back up soon, if you'd like me to grab anything for you, or see if I can get someone to swap out rotations if you're going stir crazy.
